Tampa has a tourism problem and a locals problem and they are the same problem. The rooftop bars all look like the same rooftop bar. The Riverwalk feels like a convention. The Ybor blocks that show up in TikToks aren't where Ybor regulars are at 1am.

This is the other map. The corner bars, the back rooms, the third-shift spots. Where line cooks go after their shifts. Where the people who actually own Hyde Park duplexes drink on a Tuesday.

A locals' bar isn't a place. It's a frequency. You either match it or you don't.

The Hub · DowntownThe neon is older than you. So is half the crowd. Stiff pours, vinyl booths, the city's most honest bar.

Cheap · Tampa HeightsLooks like a hardware store. Pours like a craft cocktail bar. The kind of place that becomes your place after one visit.

The Independent · Seminole HeightsWhere you go when you want to talk and hear yourself. Bartenders remember your last drink. Stay for trivia, leave before karaoke.

Beer · low-key

Bahama Breeze backbar (yes, really) · WestshoreAn admission against interest. After 11pm on a weekday, this is where half the airline crews end up. Make of that what you will.

Tip in cash on the first round. The bartender clocks it. Everything that happens next is better.
Sit at the bar. A table is a tourist tell. The bar is where the room actually is.
Don't ask for the wifi password. Just don't.
Be on time for the room, not the clock. Some of these places are dead at 9pm and exactly right at 11.

What we left out.

We left out the rooftops on Water Street. They're fine. They are also, by design, indistinguishable. The point of this list is the bars you can't pull from a Google search — the ones that need a person to tell you about them. Which is sort of the whole point of myannai, too.
